Week 15

Congratulations to the cast and crew of Shrek!  Next week, student ENL schedules (and class schedules) will be changing for the Spring Semester.

4/5 - This week we studied the song "Shower the People" by James Taylor.  We talked a lot about figurative language, idioms, and the poetic license that songwriters have when they are writing songs (using words like 'gonna').

Home Connection:  What feelings does the song invoke for you?

This week we started reading non-fiction articles about mosquitos and Brazil.

Home Connection:  Ask your children what they are learning about HOW to read articles.

1 - First graders will be separating from kindergarteners beginning on Monday.

K  - Kindergarteners will be continuing their letter study and vocabulary building.  This week we learned the letter Ll.  Students wrote and sketched as many words as they could that begin with Ll on a lollipop!  We completed our letter pages, sorted letters and objects, and practiced writing the letter Ll.

Home Connection:  Ask your children what begins with Ll.  See how many things you can name!

Parents - I will begin hosting individual conferences, please e-mail me to sign up.

Week 14

I hope everyone had a nice three day weekend.  Monday there was no school in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  Click to read about his "I have a dream" speech.

4/5 - This week we continued our focus of writing, with everyone working together to create a rubric we can all use to better our writing.

Home Connection:

3 - We used our researching skills to learn more about the world around us.  We are studying Brazil.

Home Connection:  What would you want to know about life in other countries?

K/1 - This week we studied the letter Rr.  Students recited Rosie the Robot.

Home Connection:  How many words can you come up with that have the letter r in them?

Parents - This week we spoke about how to best help your children learn English.  If you do not already have books in your home language, they can be borrowed from the NYPL.  (Click the link to view their site.)  If you are interested in learning or improving your English, please join us on Wednesdays at 8:15 am in Room 212A.  Your children can stay in the cafeteria.

Week 13

Welcome back to school!  It was a very busy first week back.  The 4th and 5th graders began writing about their vacations.  Third graders started to get back into their study of South America.  Kindergartners and 1st graders began writing "how to's" to explain how we made our adorable smiling snowmen.  Stop by the ENL room to see them proudly displayed in the hallway!
